Cheap soil pH testers are a poor choice for real garden decisions, but they can be worth a few dollars for a rough first look. Drop a $10 probe and a calibrated meter into the same bed and they can report wildly different numbers. That gap is the whole problem. Price and trust are linked here, so the cheapest tool often hands you a reading you should not act on.

The trouble starts with how those two-prong probes work. Most do not measure true pH at all. They react to moisture and salt in the soil and turn that into a needle reading or a number on a dial. The moment a real decision rides on the number, the cheap probe stops being good enough.

The best value, then, is rarely the cheapest probe on the shelf. For repeat checks at home, a mid-range calibrated meter pays for itself because the readings hold up over time. For a one-time decision before you amend a bed, an inexpensive lab test wins on both cost and confidence. Spend your dollars where they buy a number you can act on, and let the bargain-bin probe stay in the bin.
