It depends on the tester. Soil pH testers accuracy splits hard along the line of price and design. A quality calibrated meter gives you a reading you can trust. The cheap two-prong probe sold at most garden centers often does not. So when people ask do pH testers work, the honest answer is that some work well and some barely work at all.
Here is the proof you can do at home. Push two different testers into the same patch of soil and they can disagree by a full pH unit. The hand-held meter came closest to that 82-lab average. The probe gave the same reading for three different sample groups. It could not tell apart soils more than 2.0 pH units apart. That last part is the killer. A tool that reports one number for wildly different soils is not measuring much of anything. Worse, it can send you amending soil that was fine all along.
Color kits sit in between. The study put their accuracy between the probe and the meter. So a chemical kit is a fair way to get a rough estimate when you need one. The dye changes shade with acidity, and you match it against a chart. It won't pin down a tenth of a point. But it will tell you whether your soil leans acidic or alkaline, which is often all a home gardener needs to start.
So put your money where the data points. Buy a quality soil pH meter and treat calibration as part of the routine, not an optional step. Rinse the probe in distilled water first. Calibrate it against the buffer solutions it came with. Then test a slurry of soil and distilled water rather than jabbing it into dry ground. A dry probe reads junk no matter how good the meter is, so the slurry step is worth the extra two minutes every time. Use distilled water for the mix, not tap water, since tap water carries its own minerals that nudge the reading off.
One more habit keeps you honest. Even a good meter can drift over a season, so send a sample to a soil lab once in a while and compare. If your meter tracks the lab within a couple tenths, you know it's working and you can keep using it with confidence between lab tests. Soil pH itself swings up to a full unit across seasons, so you want a tool steady enough to catch real change, not a probe that wanders on its own.
