Lift the corner of a sheet-mulched bed and look at the seam where two pieces of cardboard overlap. The paper is slick and damp, the gap underneath stays dark, and slugs pile into that cool, moist seam by the dozen. That hidden pocket is one of the real sheet mulching disadvantages people only find later. The big ones are a slow timeline, blocked air and water, torn paper from foot traffic, and tough weeds that punch right through.
The slug seam is more than a gross surprise. It tells you the cardboard is holding a layer of trapped moisture against the soil. Wet paper can slow cardboard gas exchange, so less oxygen reaches the roots and soil life below. UC IPM warns that thick paper layers can block both air and water from moving freely. Worms and microbes need that air to do their work. Choke off the airflow and the whole system slows down. A bed that should be teeming with life can turn sour and gray under a thick, soggy mat of paper.
Water is the next problem. Rain often runs off the edge of the paper instead of soaking through it. That runoff pools along the seams and at the bed border, which is the exact spot where weeds love to sprout. So the paper can starve the middle of the bed while feeding weeds at the rim. You also cannot see the soil, which makes moisture hard to track.
That blind spot matters during a dry spell. You water from the top, but the paper sheds most of it. The soil beneath can sit bone dry while the surface looks fine and damp. By the time you notice a wilting plant, the roots may have been thirsty for days. Foot traffic makes it worse. Wet cardboard tears the moment you step on it, and a torn sheet is a wide-open door for weed seeds. One careless step across a soft, soaked bed can split a sheet you spent an afternoon laying down.
Tough perennials with deep roots beat cardboard. Quackgrass, bindweed, and Canada thistle send rhizomes and taproots straight through a single sheet and keep growing.
These deep-rooted weeds are the most common reason for weeds coming back after all your work. Quackgrass spreads on underground rhizomes that run wide and shallow. Bindweed and Canada thistle drive taproots several feet down. A sheet of cardboard barely slows them. They store enough energy in those roots to push a new shoot up through paper, mulch, and all. Annual weeds smother well, but these three are a different fight. You can mulch a whole bed, walk away for a month, and come back to find thistle shoots standing tall right through the chips.
Time is the last big cost. Sheet mulching is a waiting game, not a quick fix. The slow decomposition of the cardboard and mulch means the bed needs about six months to a year before it is ready to plant. UC IPM and the University of Maine both point to this long lead time. If you build a bed in spring hoping to plant that same season, you will likely be disappointed.
You can dodge most of these sheet mulching disadvantages with a few changes. Dig out quackgrass, bindweed, and thistle by the root before you lay anything down, since cardboard will not stop them. Run drip irrigation lines on the soil and under the paper so water reaches the roots instead of running off. Use a single layer of cardboard, not a thick stack, to keep air and water moving. Then top it with two to three inches of wood chips to hold the paper flat, feed the soil, and protect that fragile sheet from tearing.
